Ratliff City started as a small community as the nearby Healdton Oil Field grew during the oil boom of the early 20th century. While the area was unofficially known as Ratliff’s Corner for early entrepreneur Ollie Ratliff, the town officially changed its name to Ratliff City in 1953 with the establishment of a U.S. Post Office.

Ratliff City today is an important hub for extreme northwest Carter County with general shopping and services at the intersection of State Highways 7 and 76.
